Photographs are at the heart of any website, and the Club is lucky to have many images recorded through the years. Categories include some which will simply be directed to other menu options, but the following will be included;
Playing – just a link to the Playing page at the moment
Travelling – an album is available in ‘Exchange visits and Reciprocity
Juniors – a link to the Juniors page where there is a comprehensive gallery from the 1970’s onward
The Editor hasn’t yet decided whether to distribute photo albums throughout the site, as is the case at the moment, to concentrate them in one place, probably in these pages, or continue with the mix. In the meantime, you can use the menu options in red above, you can simply trawl around the site, or use the search facility, and you can view a few extra albums which have found their way here.
A mixed gallery with images from the 1960’s to the present day – see just below…
Ladies International matches, late 1940’s to late 1960’s
These splendid images, usually featuring at least one ESC lady player are from our black and white archive collection
This 1937 Gray’s racket somewhat predates the other photos, but no doubt some of the lady players would be using something very familiar (Roy Cowper still does). At 27s/6d (£1.38 in new money), this equates to around £95 in 2021
1949 March Wales V Scotland in Cardiff- Mrs Christine McClure (on the right) representing ESC
1951 January Scotland v wales, Mrs Bethia Harding-Edgar and Mrs Christine McClure representing ESC
1951 England V Scotland at Hove – Mrs Bethia Harding-Edgar (2nd from the right) representing ESC
1953 – the US ladies team versus Scotland at ESC. In later years, a cocktail party was held for them, and who knows, that possibly also happened in 1953
1954 February, Scotland V Wales, Bethia (centre facing right, and Rachel Harding-Edgar (3rd from the left) representing the Harding Edgar dynasty
1965 Sylvia McClure on the right catching a little stardust from the incomparable Heather Mackay (second left)
1965 February, Landsdowne Club London: the reporter somewhat impudently describes Sylvia McClure as ‘strong and talented but not yet nimble’. We don’t think that’s what the photo is showing!
1960’s sometime – Sylvia McClure and Brenda Carmichael (extreme left and right)
1960’s Scottish International Ladies, Brenda Carmichael centre back row
1967 Feb, Scotland 4 Wales 1; Brenda Carmichael and Dorothy Sharp, front row extreme left and right
This album is a small selection of ladies teams in domestic (i.e. Edinburgh and Lothians leagues) between the 1980’s and today. The collection is a bit sparse, and several names have not as yet been identified, but hopefully some of you out there will be able to assist on both fronts.
