This event, started in 1988, is described in Jim McLauchlan’s interview thus:
“The exact date is on the trophy (1988) but the tournament was started 2 years before that and called the Festival of Squash. To reflect the more social side of the event we changed it to the Octoberfest (I had just returned from the Octoberfest beer festival in Munich). The trophy was put up and called the McLauchlan Trophy the year after by the board of that time. I think I ran the leagues for the first 5 years, then Gerry Anslow took over, followed by Paul Macari then Simon“.
So there you have it. Perhaps the most successful competition in the Club’s history is the one in which just about anyone can compete. Blood, sweat and oaths are spilled and exchanged on the courts and the galleries of courts one to four on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in the summertime. Prior to that, the club was deserted from April to October. There is a moderately complete PDF version of the McLauchlan Trophy and the Plate Trophy winners available here. For now, we will have to be satisfied with a gallery of miscellaneous images from the event, mainly it has to be said from the social side of things.
